Canoeing FAQs

General information about canoeing with Cairngorms Activities.

Where are you based?

We’re based near Grantown-on-Spey, around 15 minutes from Aviemore, right in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. All canoe sessions start from, or are organised through, our centre. Full joining instructions are sent after booking.

Do I need canoeing experience?

No experience is needed for most of our canoe sessions. Many guests are complete beginners. Our instructors will show you the basics and tailor the session to suit your confidence, ability and group type.

What canoe experiences do you offer?

We offer a range of canoeing options, including family paddling, guided canoe journeys, canoe hire and bespoke group sessions. Each option suits different ages, confidence levels and group types, so we recommend browsing the sessions listed above to find the best fit.

Are there regular sessions we can book online?

Yes. We run plenty of canoe sessions during weekends and school holidays throughout the spring and summer. Live availability is shown on our calendar and most family and small-group sessions can be booked directly online.

What should we wear and bring?

Dress for the outdoors with comfortable layers, waterproofs and sturdy footwear you don’t mind getting wet. We recommend bringing a towel, spare clothes and a sense of adventure. All specialist safety equipment is provided.

Is canoeing suitable for children?

Yes – depending on the session. Some canoe experiences are designed specifically for families and younger children, while others are better suited to older participants. Each session page includes age guidance, or you can ask us if you’re unsure.

What if the weather isn’t great?

We run in most weather conditions and adapt sessions where needed. If conditions make a particular canoe experience unsuitable, we’ll discuss alternatives or next steps with you. Safety and enjoyment always come first.

Can you add dates or organise sessions for groups?

Absolutely. If you’re booking for a group, or can’t see suitable dates online, please get in touch. We regularly add extra sessions and create bespoke canoe experiences for schools, youth groups, adult groups and families.
